normally, i don't mind where i'm at in my life.
i'm forty, no kids, low-paying job, live in a trailer court, etc (and trust me there's more to the etc, then i've already mentioned), but today i had a hard time.. one of my best friends from high school was a big dope head (no offense to the dope heads out there).
he showed up nearly every day to our first period art class smelling of weed and was generally so whacked out of his mind that he got horrible grades.. he finally graduated - barely - and made it to college.
In my many travels to Germany, one thing always stood out to me....The Germans regard all work as noble. Being a waiter is considered a career, and great strides are made to be as professional as possible. All work is noble if you take pride in what you are doing. Good luck on your journey!

But as a Christian, not a JW, I have evaluated what I think is pleasing to God with respect to the holidays
When I think of what is pleasing to God as a parent, I am inclined to choose things that reflect how nurturing I am as a parent. My children have been raised with nonJW relatives and JW relatives. When they speak of how bonded they are with a particular side of the family, they inevitably point to the times spent during the holidays with the nonJW side.
The JW's taketh away plenty, but they never replace it with anything.....tangible..... just words....
I appreciate your best wishes and once again apologize for the low blow.
Peace to you

Pahpa my personal belief system regarding Xmas has absoluelty nothing to do with what JW's envision it to be.
We have a family tradition of pulling out the tree after Tgiving and decorating it with ornaments. Many ornaments were hand made by our children in school from the time they were in kindergarden up to maybe 5th or 6th grade. Little cars, ones that say I love you, ....etc.....Each ornament reresents a time in their life. They are special. We listen to the Xmas music from A Charlie Brown Xmas. We bond as a family and the memories that we have shared during the holidays are overwhelmingly special to us.
Families bonding together and creating positive memories that will last forever.....I don't really think God objects.
JW's condemn what they do not understand.
I apologize, my last comments to you were shallow and hollow....do me a favor and rise above the JW's on this one notion and consider that holidays are important to people, but not because of the reasons that JW's state.

If you are offended by such subjects, don't you think it would be better for your own sensibilities to stay completely out of the building? After all, this is the "Jehovah's Witness Discussion Forum."Personally, I would regret anyone leaving because of a difference of opinion. But it is an option we all have.
You think like a JW and you reason like a JW. You may have left the JW's officially. But they have not left you. Why not go back and become one?

I'm surprised that you pondered and commented on Elihu/Elijah's posting if you are offended by the topic. (It seems you willingly entered the elevator knowing the conditions.)
The problem is that some gas passing is so bad that it permeates all the elevators and ajoining common areas....you can't figure out where it is coming from and you end up entering the elevator and the door closes before you realize its source..
That's why I steer clear of JW's and those who hold their views.

Now, I ask you: why did you make the point that you DO celebrate Christmas.
I'm glad you asked. Elihu/Elija posted his topic on Novemeber 23rd, Thanksgiving Day, a holiday. I've known JW's who go out on service on Thanksgiving and/or Xmas knowing full well that people are celebrating their holiday and don't want to be disturbed and especially don't want to hear about how the JW's view the holidays as pagan.
JW's are the only people I have known who make a big deal about celebrating holidays. I don't feel that they are truly considerate of other people who wish to celebrate their holidays.
Like I noted before, I grew up with many Jewish friends and not one of them ever made a big deal about Xmas.
To me going on about not celebrating Xmas is a bit like passing gas in a crowded elevator....it spoils the ride down for everyone.

I make the point because it was part of the original discussion posted by Elihu/Elijah. I don't understand the intent of your question? Do you question the honesty of a person because you disagree?
My intent is to understand why someone who leaves the JW's feels it neccessary to bring up their disdain for Xmas. Is it to spark controversy?. Is it to ilicit a particular response? Is it to show a superior attitude? If I knew your reasoning then I wouldn't need to ask the question. Is it that difficult a question to answer?

Why is it neccessary for someone to make it a point that they don't celebrate Xmas? Honest answer please. Really honest answer please. Why do you make it a point?
I am sincere in asking this. I understand a JW does this, since this is what they are told to do, but once you leave the JW's why would you want to make this a point. What is your motivation for doing so? I knew many Jews growing up, they never made a point of it. Why do you?

Like you, I believe that the pagan origins of the holidays such as Christmas prevent me from celebrating. But if fellow Christians decide to participate it will be between them and God. However, I do believe that Christians have the right to express their views however unpolular they may be
